The ladies are flawed and they don’t pretend not to be but you cheer for them because dammit, they’re trying and the world isn’t exactly doing them any favors.
One of my goals for 2019 was to keep a running ranking of every movie I watched this year. That way I wasn’t spending too much energy trying to figure out how I felt about a movie from January when December rolled around. I still ended up shifting some of the movies at the end but it was much easier starting out with a baseline.
With awards season upon us I find myself already being disappointed by the nominees. Many great performances and movies are being overlooked (as usual) and rather than being frustrated I’ve decided to do my part in making sure they’re recognized.
What better way to do that than creating my own awards?
The idea of the Mavericks making a trade has led to much confrontation among MFFL’s. While some say we need a big body (including the front office according to Woj), others say we need a defensive wing. Then you have those that say that we don’t need to make a move at all. They either bring up the ghost of Rondo past, or the fear of ruining team chemistry.
Waves has a strong cast, headlined by Sterling K. Brown and rising star Kelvin Harrison, Jr. The first story is about toxic masculinity but both stories highlight how a lack of communication within a family can be devastating.
Before the season I predicted the Mavs would make the playoffs but I had them in the 7-8 range. However with some of the top teams underperforming for different reasons (Blazers and Warriors injuries, Jazz chemistry) the Mavs looked to be in even better position to make the playoffs, perhaps a 4-5 seed. It appears Luka has other plans, though and has carried the Mavs all the way to the 2 seed one fourth of the way through the season.
I watch a lot of movies and I would be lying if I said that I didn’t forget many things but the opening 5 minutes of The Last Black Man in San Francisco are the most powerful opening 5 minutes I can remember seeing.
Brittany Runs a Marathon starts out strong with great humor and an inspiring story. Then, when things appear to be looking up for Brittany she devolves and hurts the people around her. This killed the good vibes and simply made me dislike her the rest of the movie.
I went into Parasite blind so I was incredibly shocked by what I saw. Bong Joon Ho has to be up for every writing and directing award for his work here. Even when I knew things weren’t going to go well I felt secure and when he took that away it left me devastated. By the end I was hurt but the message had been received.
You will laugh and you will cry. Taika Waititi’s Nazi Germany satire Jojo Rabbit manages to make you laugh through most of its runtime while still delivering serious messages throughout. Even when things get heavy you can’t help but enjoy this movie.
