Mavs Outsiders: What is Jason Kidd Cooking?

Another Mavs loss, another pair of questionable Jason Kidd late-game decisions. Let’s talk about it.

The Dallas Mavericks capped off a 1-2 week with a loss to the Phoenix Suns. Having also lost to the Indiana Pacers and former head coach Rick Carlisle this week, the Mavs failed twice against familiar foes. Sandwiched between those losses was a win over the Philadelphia 76ers and every game went down to the wire. The Mavs simply have some things to figure out.

In this week’s episode, Bibs and Reese focused on the Suns game specifically when breaking down the decisions Jason Kidd is making that are costing the team games. Playing defense will remain a struggle as long as the Mavericks remain without a steadfast defensive anchor, but is Kidd truly putting this team in the best position to win every night? The Outsiders don’t believe so.

The conversation focuses on two decisions in particular. The first was the decision to close the game with Dwight Powell over Christian Wood. Wood was a huge part of keeping the game connected in the 4th quarter where he contributed:

11 points
3 fouls drawn
1 steal (Tim caused the turnover and Wood cleaned it up to be fair)
and 1 offensive rebound

The other questionable decision was to replace Josh Green with Tim Hardaway Jr. The entire night, Durant scored 2 points while Josh Green was guarding him and seemed to have a hard time shaking him in off-ball situations. Bibs and Reese discuss these two decisions in detail.

Finally, Bibs and Reese closed out the show with their weekly segments. The Fantasy League is moving into its last week and the $100 Grand Prize is on the line. We are close to having all of the playoff teams decided but there is still some maneuvering to do for seeding.
